Family, frolics, and folk rock

February’s Family Day weekend is Canada’s winter blues remedy. With time away from eating right, paying bills, and organizing closets you can rediscover fun and fresh air here in the Columbia Valley.

Start by unearthing your artistic bent and sketch or paint something coffee related and enter the Invermere Coffee Fest Art Competition.

Tap your toes to the folk rock of Elk Run and Riot February 17 or the pop/country tunes of The Reklaws February 16. Admire the creative work of filmmakers and the outdoor pursuits of adventurers at the Mountainfilm on Tour Festival with nine documentary films February 8 or 9.

Star light, star bright calls up a popular nursery line but it also applies to Fairmont Hot Springs Resort’s Starlight Challenge each Friday in February. Adults can enter snowboard and ski races while children and less fit athletes can night ski or try twilight snow tubing.

Put your plaid on and join in the fun at Panorama Mountain Resort’s Lumberjack and Jill Family Day Weekend. Try potato sack races, horseshoe throwing, and logrolling as well as regular winter sports.

If February fun also means cuddling with your special someone, Copper Point Resort in Invermere will help you celebrate Valentine’s Day with a special three-course meal and live music.

It may be a few weeks before the sap starts to rise in the trees and the forest springs to life but savoring mountain culture now will vanquish any winter blahs you have. Frolic on.
